$1.6 million in disaster funding for the Gold Coast |

Gold Coast MPs today announced $1,602,699 in disaster relief funding for the Gold Coast City Council to help cover the costs of emergency works and post-disaster repairs after the region was buffeted by storms in 2007 and 2008.
Local Members of Parliament Margaret Keech (Albert), Peta-Kaye Croft (Broadwater), Peter Lawlor (Southport) and Christine Smith (Burleigh) met with Mayor Ron Clarke to officially announce the funding.
"The storms in late 2007 and early 2008 caused widespread damage throughout the region, damaging significant sections of the Gold Coast’s road network and leaving council with a major clean-up job,” said Member for Southport Peter Lawlor.
“Council crews spent many hours clearing debris from parks and reserves across the city to ensure the safety of local residents and visitors.”
The Member for Broadwater Peta-Kaye Croft said this time around, more than $477,700 was spent just clearing storm debris from roads on the Gold Coast.
“Almost $100,000 went towards clearing waterways, while 0ver $81,000 went to repairing public fences and $149,200 cleaning up parks,” said Ms Croft.
Major restoration works included:
- Tallebudgera Creek Road, Tallebudgera - $345,826 in repair works;
- Petsch Creek Road, Ingleside - $197,410;
- Firth Park, Mudgeeraba - $148,399;
- Araluen Road, Tallebudgera - $133,187;
- Hinze Causeway, Austinville Road - $128,230;
- Austinville Road bridge, Austinville - $104,426;
- Reids Crossing, Tallebudgera - $47,603;
- Lanes Road, Wongawallan - $43,762; and
- Austinville Access Road, Austinville - $42,304.
Member for Burleigh Christine Smith said it was important that emergency repairs take place as soon as possible after natural disaster events.
“Making sure public assets are repaired and getting the local road network back up and running are crucial to ensuring community life gets back to normal and a council can get on with it’s job of delivering essential services,” said Ms Smith.
“That is why the State and Commonwealth governments have contributed $1,602,699 in funding to help with repairs. Gold Coast City Council has also played its part by contributing $534,232.”
The Member of Albert Margaret Keech said that this funding allocation had also helped to support the jobs of local workers during the global economic slowdown.
Since 2004-05, the State and Commonwealth governments have provided the Gold Coast City Council with more than $3.59 million under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements program.
