Southport State School teacher aide Sharon Wicking was today awarded a $1200 grant for professional development in recognition of the support she provides to teachers and students.
Ms Wicking was one of 30 teacher aides across the state awarded Professional Development Grants for Teacher Aides by the Department of Education, Training and the Arts to recognise their outstanding work.
Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said Teacher Aide Day (Sept7) was an ideal time to acknowledge our most talented teacher aides by providing professional development grants of up to $1200.
"Sharon will use the grant to undertake a Certificate IV in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages," Mr Lawlor said.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said teacher aides provided an invaluable service to the school by easing teachers' workloads and providing personal support to students, particularly those with special needs.
"There are about 13,000 teacher aides currently working in state schools who perform a variety of tasks from supporting student learning and providing administrative support to coordinating work placement programs," he said.
