Communities Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr today announced $1.2 million in grants for 49 community organisations to boost their services between the Gold Coast and far North Queensland.

"Neighbourhood and community centres are centrally located and accessible, making them an important community asset which is why I am delighted to award this latest round of grants," Ms Nelson-Carr said.

"The centres also play an increasingly important role in delivering quality services and support to children, families and local communities, including child care and counselling services, public performance and youth spaces."

Among organisations to receive grants are the Greenvale Community Hall in Charters Towers which will receive $22,257 to install a new kitchen and seating, making it an even better multipurpose public venue, while the Hervey Bay Community Centre will get $50,000 towards a new purpose-built facility to replace its current ageing premises.

"This funding is an example of the Queensland Government's commitment to building strong, supportive and inclusive communities, especially in rural and regional areas," said the Minister.

"Through the grants program community and neighbourhood centres get support for a wide range of projects, from installing playgrounds, fencing and non-slip flooring, to wheel-chair access and local community services."

The grants are part of the $5 million Best Start-Supporting Families initiative.

In the first stage of the grants program, 56 organisations received $492,750, with $1,219,402 distributed this time around. The third and final stage of the grants program will allocate $710,000 later this year.
