Southport Steam Laundry has received a $150,000 bonus from the State Government for cutting its water and energy use and reducing waste.

Environment Minister Desley Boyle visited Southport Steam Laundry on the Gold Coast today to officially hand over the cheque, as part of the Environmental Protection Agency's signature partnership program with Queensland business and industry - ecoBiz.

Ms Boyle said Southport Steam Laundry had become an eco-efficient expert in the dry cleaning and laundering sector.

"Southport Steam Laundry is a large commercial laundry that processes over 2000 tonnes of linen per year," Ms Boyle said.

"This money will help the business cover the costs of buying and installing a large continuous batch washer which has made an impressive impact since being switched on 12 months ago.

It has reduced the laundry's water use by 100 million litres - or 53 Olympic size swimming pools - per year, resulting in an overall annual saving of $119,000.

"This new machine uses recycled water during the washing cycle and needs clean water only for the final rinse.

"Not only is the water able to be recycled, the machine's extractor produces electricity from the spin cycle and feeds it back into the machine for reuse, and 98% of the washer can be recycled after it the reaches the end of it serviceable life (15 - 20yrs)," Ms Boyle said.

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor congratulated Southport Steam Laundry for qualifying for the ecoBiz grant.

"On top of the water savings I'm told the new system reduces chemical use by 40 per cent and uses 10 per cent less energy.

Southport Steam Laundry is setting a fine example and I hope many other businesses will take up the challenge to find ways to be environmentally friendly and help their own bottom line," Mr Lawlor said.

Ms Boyle said any business in Queensland could join the ecoBiz program.

"The ecoBiz toolbox provides businesses with a six-step process to become more efficient and more profitable through smarter resource management.

"The toolbox sets out clearly what the business needs to do at each step, as well as providing helpful reference materials."

Rebates are available to businesses that clearly demonstrate the benefits of conserving and recycling resources in a way that delivers economic, environmental and social benefit to the business and the wider community.

"These rebates are a financial help for businesses changing to more efficient practices," Ms Boyle said.

Rebates for projects (up to 30 per cent of total project value to a maximum of $150,000) are payable after completion of activities identified through the ecoBiz program.

The ecoBiz program was launched in June 2004 and will make a significant investment in Queensland business to the tune of $6million dollars over three years.
