GOLD COAST: A re-elected Beattie Government would dedicate $25,000 to rehabilitating and revegetating the Federation Walk Coastal Reserve at the Spit, Natural Resources Minister Stephen Robertson said today.

Mr Robertson, at the Reserve to officially dedicate the newly-protected reserve, said the funding would build on what had already been achieved by the local community, with more than 20,000 new plants drawing many new visitors to the northern end of the Spit.

"This money will go towards further rehabilitation and revegetation, helping the area's transformation to a thriving littoral rainforest from the neglected land it once was," he said.

He said the Beattie Government had reclassified the 92.3 ha of beachfront land as a Reserve for Park, Environment and Beach Protection and Coastal Management in July last year - the final step needed to save the land from development.

"The community effort to protect and maintain such a unique area of South East Queensland has been remarkable. It is always difficult to single out individuals in such a broad-based community activity, but Lyn Wright and Terre de Martini have been the driving force behind the push to protect this area," he said.

Mr Robertson also praised Member for Southport Peter Lawlor for championing the cause of Federation Walk.

"Peter has been a vocal advocate of this cause for some time now, and it's a testament to the concerted effort he has put in alongside Friends of Federation, the Main Beach Progress Association, and other groups, that this site has been protected.

Mr Lawlor said the work of Ms Martini and Ms Wright had been instrumental in protecting the beachfront land.

"It's a tribute to their hard work and refusal to quit that we have reached this point. They've been fighting to protect this land since 1982, and it's great to see their efforts bear such wonderful results."

Mr Lawlor said that a true community effort that had seen the gradual revegetation and rehabilitation of the significant area.

"We've seen the community turn up in large numbers to help on planting days, attend fundraising events, and helping out wherever they can.

"Their commitment was proven beyond any doubt after the bushfire that destroyed so much of their good work, when they joined forces and spent countless hours replating the Reserve."

"This funding will ensure that their efforts can be sustained in the future."
