Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor today announced construction was underway on a $2.8 million public housing complex on the Gold Coast.

Mr Lawlor said Housing Minister, Robert Schwarten approved the funding to construct two, one-bedroom and nine, two-bedroom apartments on Skiff Street, Southport.

"This construction project will deliver a welcome boost to the supply of affordable housing on the Gold Coast and are conveniently located close to shops, schools and other essential services," he said.

"This investment builds on the Beattie Government's strong commitment to public housing on the Gold Coast which has seen more than $181 million spent on new housing and housing related services in the area."

Mr Lawlor said five units would be built to adaptable design guidelines to ensure that the accommodation could be easily modified to meet the requirements of occupants with special needs.

"Using adaptable design for new construction projects is a smart initiative of the Department of Housing to reduce the long-term costs of providing housing for all Queenslanders," he said.

Mr Lawlor said Nano Constructions would manage the construction of the 11 apartments.

"This development is not only boosting the supply of affordable housing on the Gold Coast, it is also creating jobs and training opportunities for the local building industry," he said.

Mr Lawlor said construction was expected to be completed in June 2006.
