Around 300 construction jobs are in the pipeline following the official signing of a deal to build new student accommodation at the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE (GCIT). Minister for Infrastructure and Planning Stirling Hinchliffe welcomed the development agreement between Queensland Accommodation Company (a Gold Coast-based South Korean company) and GCIT for a 600 room student accommodation facility to be built at the Southbank campus.
“As well as creating around 300 construction jobs, this project has the potential to generate 60 ongoing jobs for those involved in operating the accommodation facility,” Mr Hinchliffe said. “It’s also expected to generate 40 teaching related jobs to service the increase in the student population.” The $86 million project consists of the new student accommodation and new teaching facilities for GCIT. It guarantees a minimum of 600 new international students for GCIT over two years as a result of the extra accommodation.
Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the influx of up to 600 international students would inject money into the local community. “It will be good news for the local business and tourism sectors as we will see up to 600 new international students spending their money locally and taking in the sights,” said Mr Lawlor. “This project not only addresses the shortfall in student accommodation on the Gold Coast, but will deliver GCIT extra revenue from student fees.” Mr Hinchliffe said the signing of the development agreement followed on from a Memorandum of Understanding signed in June 2007.
As part of the agreement, Queensland Accommodation Company Pty Ltd will bear all risks in relation to the progression of the project, including seeking development approval from the Gold Coast City Council and all other relevant approvals. QAC hopes to start construction as early as mid 2010 and finish in mid 2012.
There will be no financial contribution required from the State.
