Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, officially opened and named a new $3.6 million public housing complex in Pohlman Street, Southport, today.

Mr Lawlor said the 15 two-bedroom apartments were named Maxwell Smales Place in recognition of one of our local heroes who has dedicated many years of his life to helping others through volunteering.

"Mr Smales has lived on the Gold Coast his entire life with the exception of his one year of service with the Royal Australian Air Force in 1945 during WWII," he said.

"He raised his own family in Pohlman Street where he lived for 40 years.

"Mr Smales worked for various local governments during his 48 year career and held positions with the Southport Town Council before it amalgamated with other councils to form the South Coast Town Council - now Gold Coast City Council.

"Mr Smales spent the last 25 years of his career with the Albert Shire Council where he was Chief Finance Officer and Secretary of the Logan and Albert Library Board. He retired in 1990.

"Mr Smales' involvement with the local community has taken him from junior lifesaving to Secretary of the Southport Coronation Celebrations Committee and the Southport Memorial Clock Tower Committee, which helped build a sandstone clock to commemorate lives lost in World War I and II.

"For 30 years, Mr Smales was Treasurer of the Gold Coast Primary School's Rugby League Association and is a life member and co-patron of the association."

Mr Lawlor said that he had no hesitation in recommending Maxwell Smales as deserving the highest recognition for his community service throughout the years.

"I firmly believe in naming public buildings after local identities as it is one way we can record history for future generations," he said.

Mr Lawlor said the units which were now fully tenanted were designed by the Department of Public Works and constructed by Sommer and Staff Constructions Pty Ltd.

He said each unit is self-contained with a kitchen, bathroom, laundry, clothesline and private patio.

"Five of the two-bedroom apartments were designed and built to adaptable standards to help meet the needs of special need clients," he said.

"These apartments meet the needs of people who have mobility impairments or require full wheelchair accessible accommodation.

"Using adaptable design for new construction projects is a smart initiative of the State Government because it provides flexibility in housing design and reduces the long-term costs associated with delivering housing for all Queenslanders," he said.

This latest project brings the total Beattie Government funding in Southport to more than $40 million for new public housing and housing related assistance.
