3am lockout in, full strength beer and glass out for Gold Coast’s Nikon Super GP

Minister responsible for liquor and gaming, Peter Lawlor MP, today confirmed that the Gold Coast’s motoring event would be following the Queensland Government’s high risk event management guidelines.

“In August 2009 I launched the new high-risk event management guideline, which puts the community first in large-scale events including the Nikon Super GP on the Gold Coast,” said Minister Lawlor.

“The conditions on the liquor licence for the event will see a glass ban and alcohol restricted to low and mid-strength for the licensed areas. In addition, pub and club patrons will be subject to the 3am lockout throughout this year’s event”

“I would like to remind event attendees that this event is licensed, not BYO – so you can not take in your own alcohol.”

“These harm minimisation measures will keep the Gold Coast streets safe and allow families and motoring enthusiasts to enjoy the real entertainment of V8s,” he said.

For the past five years an exemption to the 3am lockout was in place for motor racing events on the Gold Coast. Following amendments passed in Parliament on 8 October 2009, prompted by submissions from local police and council and a notable increase in alcohol-fuelled violence, the lockout exemption was removed.

“By limiting the number of alcohol affected patrons roaming the streets after three in the morning, we hope to minimise binge drinking and alcohol fuelled violence at this weekend’s event,” said Minister Lawlor.

“While the Government supports major Queensland events like the V8s, we also have to duty to put measures in place to reduce alcohol related incidents, protect the safety of attendees and keep the event enjoyable for the entire community.”
