Member for Southport Peter Lawlor today announced the State Government would construct a new public housing unit complex at Labrador at a cost of $4.35 million.
Mr Lawlor said the complex in Central Street would include 16, two-bedroom apartments, providing a boost to the Department of Housing's property portfolio on the coast.
"This is great news for those people on the Gold Coast who need affordable accommodation options," Mr Lawlor said.
"Rents in the private market on the coast have skyrocketed, pricing many low and medium income earners out of the market.
"This project, together with other Department of Housing activity in the area, will see more affordable accommodation made available."
Mr Lawlor said four of the new apartments would be built to adaptable design guidelines.
"This ensures that the accommodation can be easily modified to meet the requirements of occupants with special needs," he said.
"Construction should take around seven months and the new tenants should be moving in by August."
Meanwhile, the Department of Housing had also purchased two, three-bedroom duplex units in Falconer Street, Southport at a cost of $660,000, Mr Lawlor said.
"These units will be upgraded and aligned to an appropriate standard for public housing at a cost of $7200 before being tenanted," he said.
Mr Lawlor said the Central Street project further demonstrated the State Government's commitment to public housing on the Gold Coast, which has seen more than $172 million spent of new constructions, purchases and housing services since 1998.
