Local secondary schools and tertiary students in the Southport electorate can grab a share of $50,000 prize money by entering a new short film competition, Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor said today.
Mr Lawlor said the Department of Natural Resources & Mines is funding the Liquid Lens Awards Short Film Competition to raise public awareness about the need to conserve Queensland's water resources.
Winning entries will be showcased at a special screening and awards ceremony at Brisbane's Riverfestival (2-11 September 2005).
"Water is the lifeblood of our community and industries and Queensland's future growth and prosperity depends on how we manage our finite water resources," Mr Lawlor said.
"We live on the world's driest inhabited continent yet continue to use too much water and waste too much water.
"All Queenslanders must understand they have to value every drop of water and be more efficient in its use."
Mr Lawlor said the short film competition is open to all Queensland secondary schools, students at Queensland tertiary institutions, and to workers in the Australasian film and television industries.
"It's a wonderful opportunity for local schools and tertiary students to participate in an important State Government community awareness project," he said.
"There's fantastic prize money up for grabs and we may even unearth a few budding Baz Luhrmanns along the way."
Awards will be offered in three categories for short films up to 8 minutes in length submitted by:
• Students of Queensland secondary schools (first prize $10,000 + $500 voucher for film equipment; runner up: $5,000 + $250 voucher for film equipment); • Students of Queensland tertiary institutions (first prize $10,000 and second prize of $5,000); • Open category - open to the Australasian film and television industries (first prize $10,000 and second prize of $5,000).
A $2,500 prize will also be awarded for:
• The best 30 second television community service announcement open to entrants across all categories.
A $2,500 People's Choice Award will also be given in the Best Community Service Announcement category.
All entrants in the Liquid Lens Awards must first register online at the website www.liquidlens.com.au by 20 May 2005.
Judges will only consider those short film and community service announcement entries registered and received by 5pm on 22 July 2005.
