$500,000 to boost the Gold Coast's disability day services

Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has announced extra funding of $500,000 to improve access to educational and recreational activities for people with a disability on the Gold Coast.

Ms Nelson-Carr said the Cerebral Palsy League of Queensland (CPLQ) would receive the funding to establish a new day service centre.

“Having access to day services is really important for people with a disability, offering activities such as adult education, recreational and leisure pursuits, and life skills development,” she said.

The Minister said the funding was part of $6.4 million package being shared among 16 non-government service providers across the State.

They are sharing grants of between $128,000 and $500,000 to expand day services to support more Queenslanders with a disability.

Local State Member for Southport Peter Lawlor welcomed the funding, explaining that it would enable the CPLQ to establish a new centre at Southport to replace their Broadwater centre, creating greater access to activities for their 33 current clients,” Mr Lawlor said.

“It will also provide an opportunity for more people with a disability to take part in day service programs on the Gold Coast.”

“This funding represents a significant investment by the Queensland Government in the disability sector, responding to calls from non-government organisations to boost the state’s day services,” he said.

“This is the Bligh Government helping to create a better future, delivering on the Towards Q2 vision to build a stronger, fairer Queensland we can all be proud of,” he said.

“It’s also about acting locally and making sure the residents of the Gold Coast and the surrounding region can take part in their communities and enjoy access to services, including accommodation, respite and education.”
