• I would like to respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which the event is taking place.
• I am delighted to join you here today to celebrate the official launch of the Active Communities project at Norm Rix Park.
• The Queensland Government is committed to ensuring green open spaces are available for people to meet and enjoy with families and friends, and contribute to a positive community identity.
• Labrador is fortunate to have quite a number of parks and open spaces: some are very popular among families and enjoyed by many people on the Gold Coast.
• In 2006, the Queensland Government through its Community Renewal program funded and trained The Community Retrievers, the Labrador local researchers to conduct a Labrador Renewal Area Physical Activity survey which provided data on existing physical activities in the area.
• Community Renewal and the Gold Coast City Council have joined forces to fund the Active Communities project.
• Through this project, a facilitator will be employed over the next two years to work with residents and find out what local residents love about their local parks.
• Residents and representatives from local government will be brought together to discuss park upgrades and measures to improve safety around parks.
• Residents will also be able to share their views on a range of recreational and healthy activities run from local parks for different age groups.
• Through this project, Labrador residents will be able to access a choice of parks and activities that suit their needs and the needs of families, youth and seniors, ranging from major recreational facilities to quiet neighbourhood parks.
• I would like to thank all the partners involved in this project: the Gold Coast City Council who contributed more than $280,000, Community Renewal which contributed more than $240,000, Queensland Health $5,000 and the Community Retrievers for their support and contributions to this project.
• If you haven't already done so, I invite you to visit the Gold Coast City Council's 'Active and Healthy' tent and the Community Renewal marquee to find out how you can be involved in the this project.
• Community Renewal is a Queensland Government initiative, coordinated by the Department of Housing in partnership with local governments, non-government organisations, businesses and residents to develop sustainable solutions to local issues and build community capacity.
• Lastly I would like to thank the residents of Labrador for coming today and showing your interest in shaping the future of your local parks.
• I hope you enjoy your day and the activities planned for this afternoon.
• Thank you.
