Arundel new media artist Peter Alwast will benefit from $22,363 in State Government funding to help him develop a major arts and cultural project, Member for Southport Peter Lawlor announced today.

Mr Lawlor said Mr Alwast would create a multi-projection video piece combined with a series of architectural installations to explore the diversity of Queensland culture within one suburban locality.

"Mr Alwast has identified a locality within the Gold Coast which could be perceived to be homogenously repetitive," he said.

"However, Mr Alwast will use his video work to show that the locality is home to a remarkable diversity of community groups.

"The area is home to an Islamic Mosque, an Orthodox Serbian Church, a Freemasons' retirement home, a cricket field, a Christian church, a new wave religious house and a park with an illuminated rotunda and barbecue area, all framed by mass suburbia and a Colgate Palmolive factory.

"Once his work is developed, Mr Alwast will promote it nationally and internationally to increase the possibility that it is exhibited to a wider market."

Mr Lawlor said Peter Alwast was among 40 individuals, groups and organisations to share in $839,409 in grants through Arts Queensland's latest Major Grants round.

This funding round includes $65,000 from the (Myer) Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, which is funded by both the Queensland and Australian Governments.

"The State Government is committed to the development of the arts industry and to strengthening Queensland's artistic reputation on the national and international stage," Mr Lawlor said.

"The Major Grants program supports a diversity of creative talent throughout the state to develop skills and deliver high-quality arts and cultural products and services to Queenslanders."

The current Major Grants round closed on 3 September 2004. Applicants are notified of the outcomes after a processing and assessment period.

Arts Queensland's grants funding arrangements are currently being updated for 2005. For more information about project grants, contact Arts Queensland, (07) 3224 4896 or toll-free 1800 175 531, visit www.arts.qld.gov.au or email grants@arts.qld.gov.au.
