Asbestos school roofs to be replaced

Musgrave Hill State School will have its asbestos roofs replaced in the next round of the Beattie Government's $120 million Asbestos Roof Replacement Program (ARRP).

Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, said a tender was being called for the work to be undertaken before the end of November this year.

"It's fantastic news that the two asbestos roofs at Musgrave Hill State School will be replaced in this round of the program," Mr Lawlor said.

"The exact time for the work will be determined after the tender has been awarded and discussions have been held with the school Principal.

"It will either be done during weekends or in the June or September school holidays, in line with our policy that replacement work is only carried out when students are not present."

Mr Lawlor said that by the end of June, more than 300 asbestos roofs in Queensland state schools would be replaced under the Asbestos Roof Replacement Program.

"In the five months between July and the start of the summer school holidays this year, we are aiming to replace a further 177 asbestos roofs in state schools," he said.

"This will take the program past the half way mark - an outstanding effort and a credit to all involved.

"However, to achieve this outcome, we are relying on continuing fine weather and the availability of skilled tradesmen."

Mr Lawlor said planning was also underway to replace as many as 90 additional roofs during the December-January school holidays.

"These schools will be announced later in the year," he said.
