MR LAWLOR asked the Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries (MR MULHERIN)-

QUESTION:

With reference to the Australian Pork Conference which I understand is to be held at the Gold Coast this year- How will this conference aid the further development of Queensland's pork industry?

ANSWER:

The Pan Pacific Pork Expo will be conducted at the Gold Coast Convention Centre this year from 4 to 6 May 2006.

The Pan Pacific Pork Expo is supported and coordinated by Australian Pork Limited, the national body for the Australian pork industry. The Expo concerns all sections of the supply chain associated with the Australian pork industry and attracts large numbers of industry people from across Australia and overseas. The Expo showcases some of the Australian pork industry's leading products, produce, wares and services. This year the organisers have planned an excellent seminar program featuring international and leading Australian speakers.

The presentations will include topics on: the nutritional value of pork, pig health and pig reproduction.

The Expo provides a forum for important industry issues to be analysed and discussed in seminars including: training, education, pork marketing, welfare and leading edge technology. The focus of these proceedings is on practical benefits for all producers, whether small or large.

The Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries is a sponsor of Expo 2006 and will provide a trade stand and speakers to assist the event.

The Pan Pacific Pork Expo is important for the Australian Pork Industry as it is the only pork industry trade show and conference of its kind to fully promote the Australian pork industry and its products to the rest of the world.

Since its inception in 1998, it continues to grow, attracting increasing numbers of national and international delegates and exhibitors. When the Expo was held in Queensland in 2004 it was attended by almost 600 people.
