The Builders Labourers Federation (BLF) Union offered a literal truckload of donated food, clothing and toys to Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor when its three week-long inaugural Christmas Appeal came to an end today.
Mr Lawlor accepted the donations in a special presentation at Circle on Cavill today, before passing them on to some of the Gold Coast's smaller charities on behalf of Member for Burleigh, Christine Smith, Member for Broadwater, Peta-Kaye Croft and Member for Mudgeeraba, Dianne Reilly, all of whom were also in attendance.
BLF's State Secretary, Greg Simcoe said the Appeal was a great success.
"The response to our first Appeal has been phenomenal," Mr Simcoe said.
"Both the BLF members and the entire community are to be commended for their contributions to this worthwhile Appeal," he said.
"We hope these gifts to the Gold Coast's less fortunate will make their Christmas a very special one."
Approximately $10,000 of donations of food, clothing and toys were received by the BLF over the Appeal period.
Mr Lawlor said he was impressed by the union's efforts throughout the Appeal.
"The BLF has worked hard right through this Appeal and their efforts have clearly paid off," he said.
"The selected charities will no doubt appreciate their exceptional work."
Mr Lawlor plans to distribute the donations to some of the Gold Coast's smaller charities, including:
Food Aid Set Free Care Pregnancy and Family Support Life Christian Church, Coombabah Kalwun Development Corporation
"There are a number of lesser-known charities on the Coast who do terrific work but struggle a bit," Mr Lawlor said.
"The idea behind this Appeal was to benefit these charities."
BLF's Gold Coast South Organiser, Royce Kupsch, could not be in attendance.
The Appeal was launched by the BLF on 26 November at the Q1 building site.
