The Builders Labourers Federation (BLF) Union will launch its first annual Christmas Appeal tomorrow at the site of the Q1 Tower in Surfers Paradise.

The Appeal will encourage community members to donate non-perishable foods, new clothes and toys to those in need on the Gold Coast over the Christmas period.

According to Royce Kupsch, BLF's Gold Coast South Organiser, the Appeal will help the Gold Coast's forgotten charities as well as the city's homeless and struggling families.

"This is our first Christmas Appeal and if it's anything like the Brisbane launch we did earlier this week, this is going to make a real difference," Mr Kupsch said.

The BLF Union Christmas Appeal will run over the three weeks following the launch until 16 December 2004.

"Christmas is about giving and this is an ideal way to make the holiday period a memorable one for those in need," Mr Kupsch said.

"We are confident that this will be a very successful and worthwhile Appeal," he said.

Community members can drop off donated items at Workplace Health and Safety Officers' offices over the Appeal period.

Soheil Abedian, developer of the Q1 building, is unable to attend the launch, but has donated $1,000 to set the Appeal in motion.

State Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor will be at the launch and will be involved in the distribution of the donated items at the end of the Appeal.

Mr Lawlor said the Appeal will be of significant benefit to those who are less fortunate in the Gold Coast community.

"The sad reality is, there are many people on the Coast who have tougher lives than those of us who are more fortunate," he said.

"Regrettably, Christmas time can often be a more difficult period than normal for those in need in the community.

"I encourage everyone to consider giving the gift of a donation of food, clothing or toys in this essential Appeal."

The BLF will hand the donated items over to Mr Lawlor on 16 December 2004 in a presentation to be held at Circle on Cavill in Surfers Paradise, who will share them amongst Gold Coast charities.
