Bare Your Soles for Kids Day

Mr LAWLOR (Southport-ALP) (10.26 pm):

Several weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending a barefoot bowls competition organised by the Broadwater-Southport Rotary Club. It was held at the Musgrave Hills Bowls Club. Also in attendance was the member for Broadwater, Peta-Kaye Croft. The Rotary and bowls clubs combined to provide a day of fun in support of three local charities. The Bare Your Soles for Kids day supported the Kumbari Avenue State School, Paradise Kids at Ashmore and the Smith Family on the Gold Coast. As the Rotary club president, Peter Kale, pointed out, the day appealed to people of all ages. The clubs' local project fund has distributed many thousands of dollars to local charities.

The day attracted 56 teams, that is 224 competitors, with about 350 people in total in attendance. All up $26,000 was raised, each charity received $7,000, and $5,000 went to the local project fund which wants to purchase a computer for a young TAFE student who has cancer. The Kumbari Avenue State School will use its funds for horticultural and animal facilities for the educational enjoyment of the children. This school has already benefited from a $230,000 indoor hydrotherapy pool and $10,000 for playground equipment also provided by this hardworking and progressive Rotary club. Paradise Kids intends to add an enclosed space to its building to create an all weather facility. The Smith Family Gold Coast assists almost 1,000 Gold Coast students through primary, secondary and tertiary education. It will provide learning for life scholarships with its funding.

Throughout the day there were many spot prizes, with excellent gifts provided by a very generous business community, ranging in value from $80 to $700. The day was also full of music, competitions, raffles and silent auctions. There was also a barbecue and licensed bar. Prizes for the day included airfares to New Zealand, accommodation, hospitality vouchers, theme park tickets, an 18 carat gold bracelet valued at $1,800 and a year's supply of meat.

This was the second Bare Your Soles for Kids day and the most successful to date. I look forward to an even more successful day next year. Congratulations to the Musgrave Hill Bowls Club, Peter Kale and his Broadwater-Southport Rotary Club on a very successful day.
