Accessing the private rental market in Labrador and Southport is now one step easier following the successful launch of the Housing Options project in Southport today.
Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the Queensland Government's Community Renewal program provided over $98,000 in funding to provide practical services to help people access long-term private rental accommodation.
"People sometimes need some administrative assistance to access private rental dwellings rather than relying on the public housing system," he said.
Mr Lawlor said the project had arisen from the difficulty people experience when trying to secure private rentals in a highly competitive rental market.
"Two experienced workers will assist prospective tenants, and approach real estate agents on their behalf, to identify appropriate housing solutions," he said.
"They will also assist people organise the right documentation for real estate agents, and help with practical details such as key deposits, driving to real estate agencies and property inspections, or organising moving arrangements."
Member for Broadwater, Ms Peta-Kaye Croft MP, said that homelessness was an issue for families and singles living in the area.
"Based at Set Free Care, the workers will assist individuals, families and young people under 25 years of age in the Labrador/Southport community," she said.
"They will hold an information session to help people understand their rights and responsibilities before signing a private lease, to give them greater opportunity for a successful tenancy."
Blair Athol Accommodation and Support Program will manage the project.
Community Renewal is a Queensland Government initiative coordinated by the Department of Housing. Renewal activities in Labrador are delivered in partnership with local residents, the Gold Coast City Council and other government and non-government agencies.
Since 1998, the State Government, through its Community Renewal program, has invested more than $84 million in renewal communities around Queensland, including over $11 million in the Gold Coast area..
