Gold Coast community groups will receive more than $4.7 million to help deliver support and maintenance services to the elderly and people with a disability, Member for Southport Peter Lawlor announced today.

Mr Lawlor said Health Minister Stephen Robertson approved the additional funds under the Home and Community Care Program.

"The funding will be used to provide services such as social support, nursing care, allied health care, food services, respite care, home maintenance and transport," Mr Lawlor said.

"Home and Community Care services help eligible people access services to help them stay living in their own homes longer".

"It's not acceptable for someone to be excluded from community life because they have a disability," he said.

Under the program the following community groups have been allocated -

"It is part of a $278 million state-wide funding package for 800 service providers which will assist more than 150,000 people throughout Queensland.

"These grants will deliver real and direct help to people all over the state.

"It represents the Beattie Government's commitment to support older people, people with a disability, and their carers."

"Now, more than ever, these services are needed to support Queensland's growing and ageing population."

Mr Lawlor said the base funding to existing services would increase by 2.2 per cent and there would be an increase in the Meals on Wheels subsidy.

"Funding for new or enhanced services will be allocated to priority areas such as the provision of culturally appropriate services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, Australian South Sea Islander people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and for people living with dementia," he said.

"Carers who look after the frail aged or people who have a disability will also benefit through an increase to in-home respite services."

Home and Community Care is funded by Queensland Health and the Australian Government's Department of Health and Ageing and is delivered by local community-based organisations, churches and local councils.
