Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, today announced that the State Government had purchased two apartments and one house in the area to boost the supply for social housing.
Mr Lawlor said the purchases amounted an investment of more than $850,000 thousand in housing for low income earners in the Gold Coast.
"The Beattie Government's record $719 million State Budget allocation for social housing is starting to flow," he said.
"The Department of Housing has purchased a two bedroom apartment in Labrador, a two bedroom apartment in Southport and a 3 bedroom house at Arundel.
"The properties will be upgraded and aligned to the department's high standard for public housing before being let to eligible applicants."
"The investment the State Government has made with these purchases adds to the more than $58 million spent on public housing and housing related services in the Southport electorate since 1998."
Mr Lawlor said that this sort of investment was threatened by the Commonwealth Government recently deciding to put future housing funding out to tender in the private market.
"It is very hard to make money out of the poor and vulnerable people who rely on public housing.
"Minister Brough is seeking to put the poor and vulnerable out to tender," he said.
