MR LAWLOR asked the Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries (MR MULHERIN)-

QUESTION:
What level of resource was committed to ensuring the last residue of bovine tuberculosis was removed from Queensland?

ANSWER:
In August and October 2000, tuberculosis was diagnosed in cattle from a large cattle station in northern Queensland. A program of destocking through disposal of suspect cattle to slaughter was carried out during 2002 under a nationally Approved Property Program endorsed by the national Tuberculosis Freedom Assurance Program (TFAP).

The total number of cattle destocked at that time was 8 783 head. A testing program of the remaining cattle was put in place and was successfully concluded in November 2006. Over 20 Biosecurity Queensland staff were involved in the final testing round of 33 279 head of cattle - accounting for 540 work days of effort. The completion of the program concludes the testing requirements on the last herd known to be infected with tuberculosis in Queensland. Industry will contribute over $300,000 towards the producer's costs of the 2006 testing program.
