Work will start this month on the $32 million Broadwater Parklands project that will rejuvenate the area into an envied dynamic recreational precinct, Premier Anna Bligh said today.
Ms Bligh this morning joined with local MPs - Member for Broadwater Peta-Kaye Croft and Member for Southport Peter Lawlor - in visiting the Parklands project site.
"This project will transform the foreshore into a dynamic recreational precinct in time for Queensland's 150th Celebrations in 2009," said the Premier
The Queensland Government has provided $16 million to the Gold Coast Council to bring the project to fruition. The funds are drawn from the $100 million Queensland's 150th Celebrations Legacy Infrastructure Fund.
"This is a very exciting and important project for the people of the Gold Coast and I am delighted to see it underway," she said.
The Southport Broadwater Parklands project will rejuvenate the existing Parklands and provide improved recreational facilities for locals and tourists.
"The project will also involve reinstating the pier theatre which was originally built in 1927 and revitalizing the heritage listed Southport Bathing Pavilion, built in 1934."
"This project will further enhance the usage of the already popular Gold Coast precinct," said Ms Bligh who grew up as a teenager on the Gold Coast.
Ms Croft said that the Southport's waterfront has played an important role in the history of the region. It has not only been a major tourist attraction, but provided a focal point for the community throughout its social and economic development.
Mr Lawlor said that the project will refocus attention and activity towards the Broadwater and provide amenities that will enhance community life in Southport, while developing new and further tourism opportunities for the future.
Ms Bligh said that Queensland's 150th Celebrations Legacy Infrastructure Fund was created specifically to develop projects such as this.
"That is - projects that both honour our history and heritage, while providing real and lasting benefits to the community for the years to come," said the Premier.
The Southport Broadwater Project is due for completion in December 2008.
