The Building Services Authority (BSA) will hold an information session on the Gold Coast next week to inform building industry workers about new payment laws introduced by the Queensland Government.
Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, said the new legislation made a way for payment disputes to be quickly resolved.
"The Building and Construction Industry Payments Act 2004 will have significant ramifications on the $18 billion industry in Queensland when introduced on 1 October 2004," Mr Lawlor said.
"People in the building and construction industry should attend this session to learn how the payment reforms will impact upon them and their business.
"This system will improve cash flow due to an independent adjudicator's ability to make an interim decision over payment disputes, in a fast and efficient manner with quick turnaround times.
"There is no doubt this will impact how business is carried out throughout the industry with regard to contract administration and the industry's payment culture."
Mr Lawlor said any failure to honour contractual obligations by one party often caused a domino effect on other contractors resulting in restricted cash flow, and in some cases, insolvency.
"This is a grossly unfair practice and one, which will hopefully be stamped out by the introduction of this Act," she said.
"It is all too frequently the case that small subcontractors, such as bricklayers, carpenters, electricians and plumbers, do not get paid for their work.
"Those Queenslanders who gain their livelihoods through the building and construction industry deserve payment for the satisfactory work they have completed."
