Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor today urged individuals, businesses, community groups and the media to enter the Beattie Government's inaugural Queensland Consumer Protection Awards.
Mr Lawlor said $1500 cash prizes were up for grabs in each of four award categories.
"The aim of this new awards program is to recognise and acknowledge Queenslanders who help protect consumers and contribute to a fair marketplace," Mr Lawlor said.
"There are many worthy individuals, business and industry associations and media in the Southport electorate and I urge them to enter the awards, or nominate a worthy individual, business or project that advances consumer protection and fair trading in Queensland."
The award categories are:
• Tradesmart Award to recognise achievement by a Queensland business, company or professional/industry association in promoting best practice in fair trading; • Consumer Advocacy Award to recognise achievement in promoting fair trading outcomes by an individual, non-government body or community organisation; • Public Awareness Media Award to recognise achievement in advancing consumer and business awareness and debate about fair trading issues in the Queensland media; and • Fair Trading Minister Margaret Keech's Award for Excellence in Consumer Protection to recognise exceptional consumer protection, promotion, education or advocacy.
Mr Lawlor said nominees would be judged on their contribution to a fairer marketplace in Queensland through advocacy, promotion of fair trading best practice, or participation in the legislative process.
"Time is running out with nominations closing at 5pm Wednesday, 16 February," Mr Lawlor said.
"Finalists will be announced in March and winners announced at a special awards function in April."
