Mr LAWLOR (Southport-ALP) (7.12 p.m.): On Monday it will be my pleasure to attend the official opening of a public housing project in North Street in Southport by the Hon. Robert Schwarten, the Minister for Public Works and Housing. These 12 units will be named the Charlie and Marion McCormack Place. That name celebrates a couple who migrated from Liverpool in 1958 with their three children-Peter, Richard and Phillip-who at that time were six, three and two, the approximate ages of my four brothers. I was a little older in those days! In 1958 they came from Liverpool-
A government member: I think you were younger in those days.
Mr LAWLOR: Sorry, I was older than my brothers is what I meant. They came to live in North Street where we had lived since 1948. In those days the street was a dead end dirt track with about two cars a day on it. Now it forms part of the Smith Street motorway and there is probably about 60,000 cars on it.
The McCormacks lived there for about 30 years, not in the same flat but in the same street. Mr and Mrs McCormack were founding members of the Southport Community Workers Club. They are also life members of that club. Marion was treasurer of the club in the 1970s and Charlie has worked on the committee. Charlie also worked as a plasterer for the Department of Public Works. He also worked on projects on the Gold Coast such as the Gold Coast Hospital in 1959, various police stations, courthouses and also schools, including the Southport State High School and Miami High School. His son Richard worked for Telstra. Peter and Phillip joined Charlie in the business of plastering and they continue with that business. The McCormacks and the Lawlors have been great friends since 1958 when we were neighbours and we continue to be great friends.
This project at North Street, Southport, consists of 12 one-bedroom apartments and form part of the 2001-02 public housing new construction program. The project formed part of the 2001-02 allocation to Group Training Australia Human Resources Limited under the Housing Industry Trade Training program utilising the public apprenticeship training model. The gross project cost will be just over $2 million.
Various tradesmen have worked on this project, but the important thing is that apprentices were working on the project. The development is located centrally in Southport and is within easy reach of the Broadwater shopping and business district.
The project is a great addition to our public housing in Southport. I sincerely thank the minister, his staff and his department for all that they are doing to address the problem of public housing shortage on the Gold Coast and Southport in particular. Last changed: [PUBLISHED_DATE] at 9:00 AM
