Member for Southport Peter Lawlor has welcomed the arrival of the temporary home for the Church of Christ childcare service at the Parklands Showgrounds site.
The interim facilities at Parklands Showgrounds will be the base for the Church's childcare service while a new centre, opposite the intersection of Olsen Avenue and Crestwood Drive at Southport, is constructed.
The Church of Christ is required to vacate their current site by 1 September 2008 to allow for construction of the new Gold Coast University Hospital.
Peter Lawlor and government representatives including Gold Coast Health CEO Assoc. Prof. Adrian Nowitzke have been working to find a temporary solution to keep the childcare centre open.
"The demountable buildings which will temporarily house the service mean that the children will be able to continue the care they need with the people they love," Mr Lawlor said.
Dr Nowitzke said Qld Health is happy to have been able to fund the solution in this case.
"We know that there is some pain in making way for this major development and where possible we want to ease the way," Dr Nowitzke said.
"We are eager to see the Gold Coast University Hospital embraced as a public icon in our region. "Building community partnerships will be a key aspect of this and the process cannot start early enough. "We look forward to building on the relationships we have made working through to a solution with the Church of Christ, " said Dr Nowitzke.
With planning for the new hospital well underway, the Government expects to start early site works shortly to ensure the hospital remains on target to open in December 2012.
