Christmas came early today for five Gold Coast charities, courtesy of the Builders Labourers Federation Union (BLF).

As part of its second annual Christmas Appeal, the BLF offered more than $10,000 worth of food, toys and clothing to Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, who will distribute them to five of the Gold Coast's smaller charities.

Mr Lawlor accepted the donations in a special presentation at Perry Park, on behalf of Member for Burleigh, Christine Smith, Member for Broadwater, Peta-Kaye Croft and Member for Mudgeeraba, Dianne Reilly.

BLF's State Secretary, Greg Simcoe said the three-week appeal was, once again, a great success.

"The response to last year's appeal was incredible, but this year's was even bigger," Mr Simcoe said.

"The BLF members and the entire community are to be commended for their very generous contributions to this worthwhile cause.

"We hope these gifts to the Gold Coast's less fortunate will make their Christmas a very special one."

Mr Lawlor said he was again amazed by the hard work and dedication of the BLF.

"For the second year running, the BLF have helped make Christmas a happier time for many of the Coast's less fortunate families," he said.

"The charities will no doubt appreciate the union's exceptional work."

Mr Lawlor plans to distribute the donations to five of the Gold Coast's smaller charities, including:

  • Food Aid
  • Set Free Care
  • Pregnancy and Family Support
  • Life Christian Church, Coombabah
  • Kalwun Development Corporation
"This appeal was established last year with a view to benefiting some of the Gold Coast's lesser-known charities," Mr Lawlor said.

"I am pleased this focus has continued for this year's appeal."
