MR LAWLOR asked the Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries MR MULHERIN -
QUESTION:
How does the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries' Commercial Fisheries Information System (CFISH) help Government assess the condition of Queensland fisheries?
ANSWER:
Since 1988, the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) commercial fisheries information system ("CFISH") has been collecting data on Queensland's fisheries from commercial fishers. To date, more than 10 million records defining Queensland's daily commercial fishing activity and catch by boat are held in CFISH. This continuous set of commercial fisheries data provides a robust method of monitoring changes in the health of Queensland managed fisheries. This information is used extensively by industry and the Government to develop fishery management plans.
DPI&F Fisheries Scientists and the Assessment and Monitoring Unit undertake a variety of assessments on the condition of Queensland's Fisheries. These assessments range from detailed stock assessments for individual species on a regional or state-wide basis through to assessments of the performance of the whole fishery such as the Inshore Fin Fish (net) Fishery or the Otter Trawl Fishery. These assessments combine the data held in CFISH with independent data collections to CFISH undertaken by Fisheries. This allows robust assessments of the condition of our fisheries whether they are for a single species or a fishery as a whole.
In addition, data is made available to Institutes and Universities for independent assessments of species in which they may be interested. These independent assessments provide a useful check against studies undertaken by DPI&F. Fisheries statistics are provided to ABARE annually to aggregate into National Fisheries Statistics. These statistics are then aggregated for all fisheries agencies throughout Australia and are forwarded to the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) for inclusion in its Fishery Statistics Programme. This programme provides a summation and analysis of fishery statistics at a regional and global level. Last changed: [PUBLISHED_DATE] at 1:37 PM
