Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor today announced that five local organisations had received funds totalling $79,637 to help them enhance their good work and services in the local community.
Mr Lawlor said the Queensland Government's Gambling Community Benefit Fund had awarded the grants under its latest funding round, providing a vital source of funding for hundreds of community groups.
"The grants benefit a variety of local organisations in the community sector by enhancing their capacity to provide services, leisure activities and opportunities to Queenslanders in their local communities," Mr Lawlor said.
"I am very pleased the grant recipients in my electorate will be able to access these funds to purchase items or begin work on community projects."
The September funding round for the Gambling Community Benefit Fund will distribute almost $8 million to 513 projects across Queensland.
Southport electorate grant recipients for the September round are:
- Gold Coast Advocacy Group Inc. - $14,271
- Gold Coast Family Support Group Inc. - $14,673
- Southport Croquet Club Inc. - $12,898
- Southport Rotary Youth Centre - $28,428
- U3A Gold Coast Inc. - $9,367
Since its inception in 1994, the Gambling Community Benefit Fund has granted over $280 million to 27,270 Queensland not-for-profit, community based organisations.
Community groups in the Southport electorate have shared in more than $2.35 million from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund since Mr Lawlor's election in 2001.
Benefits to communities include the improved safety of facilities, training opportunities, better access to services and facilities, purchase of new equipment, building upgrades and greater involvement in community activities.
The Fund is generated from revenue earned from tax placed on gambling, wagering, keno, lotteries and gaming machines in Queensland and is used to fund community projects that will benefit Queenslanders.
