Computer training grants up for grabs

Gold Coast residents can learn to be computer savvy with the latest round of the Beattie Government's Technology Survival Skills grants launched in Parliament today by Minister for Public Works Robert Schwarten.

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor called on local not-for profit community organisations to apply for grants of up to $10,000.

Mr Lawlor said the Technology Survival Skills initiative was a $1 million commitment over four years to help Queenslanders who were disadvantaged in their access to Information Technolgy to undertake training.

"Despite the significant achievements made in the IT industry in recent years, some people in our community because of their age, income, location or disability have not had the same opportunities to develop these new skills," he said.

"This program is part of the Beattie Government's commitment to ensure all Queenslanders benefit from our smart state agenda.

"Computers are already part of everyday life and it's becoming more and more important that we all learn to use them."

Mr Lawlor said the Beattie Government acknowledged that in a state as large as Queensland, not everyone had equal access to computer training.

"Projects that can be funded through the grants could include developing new resources such as newsletters or a website, or a training and skills transfer program such as a mentoring group or train-the-trainer scheme," he said.

Mr Lawlor said in the program's previous two stages, the Government had funded more than 50 not-for-profit organisations, benefiting a broad range of Queenslanders from women on farms to Indigenous youths in Cape York and people with a disability on the Gold Coast.

Application forms are available from www.governmentict.qld.gov.au and will need to be lodged by Friday 22 April.
