Access to knowledge through the internet and computers has been made easier for families in Southport, Labrador and Varsity Lakes following the launch of a new State Government funded program, Tech Packs, in Southport today.
Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the Queensland Government's Community Renewal program contributed more than $71,000 to the project which will provide computers, internet access and training to families participating in The Smith Family's Learning for Life program and to other families area.
Mr Lawlor said 100 computers had been refurbished by Green PC and specific training provided so students and their families could benefit from computer and internet access in their homes.
"The project has been designed to ensure young people will not miss out on opportunities at school and in everyday life as a result of financial circumstances," he said.
"The Tech Packs project provides computers and internet access to families in Southport, Labrador and Varsity Lakes, to encourage young people to complete their secondary education and pursue further studies at TAFE or university.
Mr Lawlor said the launch of the Tech Packs project coincided with the tenth anniversary of The Smith Family's presence on the Gold Coast.
"It is inspiring to see that so many families can be helped through the Tech Packs project and that over 740 students across the Gold Coast area are being supported through The Smith Family's Learning for Life program," he said.
Community Renewal is a Queensland Government initiative coordinated by the Department of Housing. Renewal activities in Labrador and Varsity Lakes are delivered in partnership with local residents, the Gold Coast City Council and other government and non-government agencies.
Since 1998, the State Government, through its Community Renewal program, has invested $112.3 million in renewal communities around Queensland, including more than $9.9 million in the Gold Coast South and North areas.
