A grant from the Queensland Government's Training in Communities program will help disadvantaged Gold Coast youth improve their skills and their chances of employment.
Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said Arundel-based group Street-Co had received the $39,920 grant for project to help 30 young people to improve their skills in language, numeracy and literacy.
"This organisation has a 15 year history of helping youth on the Gold Coast and are well placed to deliver this training to a group of people who may otherwise drift away from further training and the labour force," Mr Lawlor said.
"Many have experienced foster homes, homelessness, drug and alcohol problems, poor mental health or a history of violence or offending.
"This program is designed to help these young people improve their self worth and help them discover lifelong learning."
Street-Co Coordinator Sarah Goodwin said the project would help participants develop life skills as well as improve language and literacy.
"A youth worker will be available to give them individual support and help manage their life and training needs,"she said. "Many young people from our previous programs are now at TAFE or in traineeships and apprenticeships, while others have chosen to continue their literacy and numeracy training."
Street-Co has also been recently funded to assist 30 highly disadvantaged young people (15-17 years), for 12 months, through the state-funded Get Set For Work program.
The Queensland Government's Training in Communities program funds organisations to provide training and related assistance to people who are least competitive in the labour market or marginalised from learning or training.
The program is administered under the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative, which has helped create more than 98 000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.
