Domestic building works nails $2 billion for quarter.

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor today announced residential building in Queensland had reached $2 billion for the July-September quarter, according to Building Services Authority (BSA) figures.

Mr Lawlor said throughout the state more than 22,340 new houses and renovations had been insured with BSA's insurance scheme in the three months to September.

"The figures show the residential housing sector continues to remain strong throughout Queensland," he said.

"On the Gold Coast, the BSA insured a total of 1,749 new houses and renovations worth $239 million.

"Queenslanders are still investing in their homes and continuing to hire contractors and sub-contractors even in a heated market.

"It is clear that Queensland's domestic building and construction industry is thriving."

Mr Lawlor said the continued vigour of the industry was good news for builders and trade contractors but warned consumers to be prepared to wait longer to have their properties renovated or a new home constructed.

"The sustained strength of the housing market has forced the cost of both labour and materials up, not to mention the shear volume of work around at the moment," he said.

"Builders and subcontractors need to be careful in what they are telling clients in relation to timeframes for completion of contracts.

"Broken promises to customers are often the start of bad feelings which can result in future disputes.

"Contractors should keep in contact with their clients and give regular updates on progress and discuss openly with their clients any problems which may arise."

Mr Lawlor said in 2003/2004 more than 88,500 residential projects worth more than $8 billion were insured with BSA's insurance scheme.
