Member for Southport Peter Lawlor announced today that works have begun on the construction of the Loders Creek Bridge.
The piling rig has arrived on site and piling for the duplication bridge has commenced on the northern side of the creek.
"The new bridge will help ease traffic congestion and heavily reduce the backwater impact in the event of another flood similar to the one in June 2005" Mr Lawlor said.
Using the Gold Coast City Council's flood model, hydraulic modelling has indicated that back-water impact will be severely reduced once the new bridges are operational.
"This was a major factor in developing the bridge, with many residents expressing their concern to me about the consequences of another flood" Mr Lawlor said.
"Whilst there are no major delays down Frank St, people may be experiencing some congestion at peak times but it won't be long before traffic will flow freely down the busy street" he said.
In the meantime residents can use alternate routes whilst construction is happening to avoid delays.
"Turpin Road or Olsen Avenue may be an option for people wanting to bypass the road works travelling into Southport or further south" Mr Lawlor said.
