Christmas has come early for three Southport organisations who have received funds totalling $60,037 to help them continue their good work and services in the community, Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor announced today.

Mr Lawlor said the Queensland Government's Gambling Community Benefit Fund had awarded the grants under its latest funding round, providing an important source of funding for hundreds of community groups throughout the state.

Southport electorate grant recipients for the December round are:

  • Bosnia-Herzegovina Association Gold Coast - $4,700
  • Gold Coast City Brass Band - $25,337
  • Southport State High School P and C - $30,000
"The grants help a variety of local organisations in the community sector to provide services, leisure activities and opportunities to the community," Mr Lawlor said.

"I am very pleased these grant recipients will be able to access their funds to purchase items or begin work on community projects."

The December funding round for the Gambling Community Benefit Fund will distribute over $8 million to 568 projects across Queensland.

Since its inception in 1994, the Gambling Community Benefit Fund has granted nearly $290 million to over 27,800 Queensland not-for-profit, community-based organisations.

Benefits to communities include the improved safety of facilities, training opportunities, better access to services, purchase of new equipment, building upgrades and greater involvement in community activities.

Community groups in the Southport electorate have shared in more than $2.41 million from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund since Mr Lawlor's election in 2001.
