Southport Steam Laundry, Newey's Drive Thru Dry Cleaners and La Rocca Marble and Granite, three innovative companies in Southport have been recognised by the State Government for their outstanding contribution to eco-efficiency.
Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation, Andrew McNamara, will present the organisations with certificates of recognition during a ceremony at Parliament House next week.
"The certificate recognises the partnership of these businesses with the Environmental Protection Agency's ecoBiz program," Mr McNamara said.
"The ecoBiz program helps Queensland businesses decrease their operating costs, gain a competitive advantage, and position themselves at the forefront of eco-efficient practices.
Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, congratulated the organisations on their efforts to help the environment and improve business practices.
"Southport Steam Laundry has installed the Southern Hemisphere's first small-scale tunnel washer which has reducing their water usage by 50 percent annually.
Mr Lawlor said that Newey's Drive Thru Dry Cleaners was the first business in Queensland to totally eliminate perchlorethylene (perc) from their dry cleaning process.
"The use of a cost effective and environmentally friendly silicon-based solvent is a significant gain for the industry and the environment."
" La Rocca Marble and Granite have also implemented eco-efficiency practices which has seen the recycling of their waste stone offcuts increase from 1.3 percent to 53 percent."
Mr McNamara said that the 17 Queensland businesses to be recognised had achieved combined annual savings of 153 terrajoules of energy, the equivalent of that consumed by 4000 average Queensland homes.
'Collectively they have also saved 15 kilotonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to taking 3700 cars off Queensland roads.
"They achieve this through energy and water innovations that will ultimately help reduce greenhouse emissions and mitigate global warming.
