Member for Southport Peter Lawlor and Member for Burleigh Christine Smith today announced funding of more than $200,000 from the Queensland Government's Community Renewal program for the two projects aimed at improving the health of up to 500 students on the Gold Coast.

Mr Lawlor said more than $160,000 would be spent upgrading the Parkwood Sharks Junior Rugby League Club.

"The Parkwood Sharks Junior Rugby League club has over 400 members and plays a significant role in the local community," Mr Lawlor said.

"The upgrade will enhance the sporting facilities and community space at the club which houses a wide range of sporting activities, including the Touch Football association, the Petanque Club and the Surf Lifesavers.

"The project provide 12 unemployed residents with work experience in the building and landscaping industry.

"A licensed builder with training qualifications will be employed to supervise participants for 14 weeks and help them sharpen their skills in tiling, landscaping, bricklaying, painting and general maintenance."

Mrs Smith said a further $40,000 would go towards the Walking School Bus program which aimed to improve the health and wellbeing of up to 500 children in Varsity Lakes as well as reduce the traffic in school areas.

"Fifteen volunteers will be trained to walk students from three local schools to the Kids Sports program run in Frascott Park," Mrs Smith said.

"The children will enjoy a nutritious snack and take part in a range of sporting activities designed for children of all fitness and ability levels."

"The Walking School Bus will head to Frascott Park from Caningeraba State School, Varsity Lakes College or Marymount Primary School giving children an opportunity to have fun together and learn about road sense and traffic safety at the same time."

Community Renewal is a Queensland Government initiative coordinated by the Department of Housing. Renewal activities in Varsity Lakes are delivered in partnership with local residents, the Gold Coast City Council and other government and non-government agencies.

Since 1998, the Department of Housing, through its Community Renewal program, has invested more than $100.8 million in renewal communities around Queensland, including more than $2.9 million in the Gold Coast South area.
