No. 296 asked on Tuesday, 6 March 2007
MR LAWLOR ASKED THE MINISTER FOR NATURAL RESOURCES AND WATER AND MINISTER ASSISTING THE PREMIER IN NORTH QUEENSLAND (MR WALLACE)-
QUESTION:
With reference to page three of the Ministerial Portfolio Statement and the Department's Blueprint for the Bush project-the Environmental Partnership Scheme-
How will the additional funding of $1.5million per year be used to enhance the excellent work that is already going on in regional Queensland?
ANSWER:
The Environmental Partnerships Scheme combines and enhances a number of existing key investments by the Queensland Government in encouraging the voluntary protection of areas of high conservation value. This Scheme brings together investments by the Department of Natural Resources and Water, through the Vegetation Incentives Program, and by the Environmental Protection Agency, through Nature Assist, Green Rewards and the Nature Refuge Program.
The additional funding of $5.5 million over three years, starting 2006/07, will be used to supplement funds already available to protect and manage up to 1,200,000 hectares of high conservation value vegetation across Queensland.
Expressions of interest for participating in the Scheme were called in May 2006. This resulted in 164 expressions of interest by the due date of 30 June 2006. Subsequently, ninety-nine of these applicants have made formal tenders by 5 January 2007 for the voluntary conservation and management of environmentally valuable vegetation on their properties. These tenders are expected to result in 138,000 hectares of native vegetation being more effectively protected and managed, an outstanding achievement for the first round of this program.
