Extra State funding for Gold Coast foster care agencies

Three Gold Coast foster care organisations have each received an extra $55,000 as part of a $2.3 million Beattie Government boost to foster care services, the Member for Southport Peter Lawlor announced today.

Mr Lawlor said the 3 Gold Coast recipients were Pathways Fostering Services, Supporting Adolescents Fostering Excellence (S.A.F.E.) and the Kalwun Aboriginal and Islander Child Care Agency.

"These services are among 26 shared family care agencies across Queensland to receive the extra funds this financial year to address the need for increased recruitment and support of foster carers, as recommended under the Reform Blueprint for the child protection system," he said.

"This state-wide funding will climb to $8.7 million in 2006-07 and the initiative represents an excellent partnership arrangement.

"These community based agencies assist the Department of Child Safety with recruiting, training, assessing and supporting foster carers and this money will enhance their efforts."

Mr Lawlor said a portion of the funding provides increased support for existing carers and will also generate additional carers of children and young people in foster care.

"This means increased placement opportunities for children and young people with moderate to high needs," he said.

"This is about capacity building for non-government agencies, improving partnerships with the Department of Child Safety and ensuring that all children and young people live in safe environments and are able to achieve their full potential.

"The Blueprint specifically recommended that shared family care agencies be provided with the necessary support and resources to recruit and support foster carers for children and young people with moderate to high needs."

Mr Lawlor said the money would be used to establish and improve supports for existing foster carers and attract additional carers for children and young people in foster care.
