The State Government's Community Renewal program will kick off its activities in Labrador with a free community movie night this Saturday 19 February.

Community Renewal will host a free screening of the family movie A Bug's Life at Norm Rix Park on Government Rd, starting at 6:00pm.

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the night was a chance for local residents to learn more about Community Renewal in a fun and safe family environment.

"Community Renewal is a Smart State initiative coordinated by the Department of Housing, which will be working in Labrador for the next five years to foster a safe, valued and proud community," Mr Lawlor said.

"The program recognises that the input of people that live and work in Labrador is vital to help determine what projects and services will be delivered over the coming five years to respond to local issues and the long term needs of the community."

Last year Premier Peter Beattie and Minister for Public Works, Housing and Racing Robert Schwarten announced Labrador was one of nine new areas around the State to be included in the Community Renewal program.

Member for Broadwater Peta-Kaye Croft said Community Renewal would involve residents in a planning process to determine what strategies and actions were needed to address important issues in Labrador.

"I am very excited about the possibilities Community Renewal offers for Labrador," she said.

"The program has the flexibility to provide new and different approaches to issues and challenges this community faces."

Labrador residents who would like to get involved in Community Renewal are urged to contact the Community Renewal Gold Coast office on (07) 3287 8571 or email communityrenewal@housing.qld.gov.au.

Community Renewal is a Queensland Government initiative coordinated by the Department of Housing in conjunction with local residents, government, business and community groups to develop communities where people feel valued, safe and proud.
