Cyber personalities for online products, robotic grass advertising and migraine reduction remedies are just some of the ideas being developed by emerging local businesses at the Gold Coast Innovation Centre.

Tourism, Regional Development and Industry Minister Desley Boyle today officially opened $1 million Innovation Centre that is already playing host to some of the region's brightest technology firms.

Based at Griffith University, Ms Boyle said the state-of-the-art facility had attracted clients of the calibre of GrassAds, MyCyberTwin, Migco Pharmaceuticals and Allotz.com

"This is about helping today's promising local businesses develop into tomorrow's leading international companies," Ms Boyle said.

"This facility is a place where ideas grow and develop to be exported to the world. It's a place where emerging businesses can walk in with their innovative ideas and walk out with a world-class product."

Ms Boyle said one of the success stories already to emerge was the expansion of GrassAds - the local company with patented robotic technology that creates ads on grass.

"This is the Smart State at work - here we have a Gold Coast business already opening an office in Florida to develop its business from golf courses and football stadiums to more mainstream events involving big business," Ms Boyle said.

"Another local company, MigcoBio, is looking at the genetic factors involved in migraine headaches with the development of therapeutic treatments to reduce their frequency and severity.

"All these companies started with one great idea - that's why it's important that we provide the necessary support to help turn those ideas into reality."

The new Innovation Centre has received $500,000 from the Queensland Government, $187,000 from the Gold Coast City Council and $250,000 from Griffith University.

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the Gold Coast facility could accommodate up to 10 firms at any time and provided office space, mentoring and business planning.

"I know there would be many Gold Coast businesses that could benefit from this facility and I encourage all to get involved," Mr Lawlor said.

"Companies in this critical early stage will get access to industry experts across business management areas including capital raising and product commercialisation."

Ms Boyle said the Gold Coast Innovation Centre was part of a Queensland-wide Innovation Network which will include technology incubators on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts and in Brisbane, as well as an innovative coaching pilot in Cairns and North Queensland.
