People living in the Southport electorate would benefit from almost $10.4 million of new funding for health services in the 2004-05 State Budget, Health Minister Gordon Nuttall said today.
"The Health Budget, a record $5.13 billion, is focused on high quality acute and emergency health services, better management of chronic diseases and promoting healthier lifestyles," Mr Nuttall said.
Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said $600,000 had been included in the Budget to begin planning for a new emergency department and intensive care unit at Robina Hospital. The services will be introduced over four years.
The project will cost a total of $9.5 million.
High dependency and coronary care services will be established followed by the opening of a 20-bed medical ward.
In 2005-2006 an emergency department will be opened capable of treating about 30,000 people a year, with about 3,000 admissions per year.
Full intensive care services are scheduled to start the following year.
There is also $2.5 million to set up a new cardiac catheter laboratory at the Gold Coast Hospital.
Heart disease has been recognised as a significant problem in communities all across Australia. The Queensland Government will invest $7.5 million in cardiac care across the state in 2004-05.
The Budget also includes $300,000 to progress the establishment of a birthing centre at the Gold Coast Hospital.
There also is an additional $5 million to help the Gold Coast Health Service District offset cost pressures and maintain responsiveness.
The Gold Coast Health Service District will also receive upgraded medical equipment valued at more than $1.9 million.
The community will also benefit from a $16 million allocation in 2004-05 to help meet the needs of increasing numbers of Queenslanders suffering 'end stage renal disease', when the kidneys are no longer able to function.
This is part of a $33.8 million state-wide initiative over three years.
During this three-year period, the Queensland Government will invest $6.3 million in renal services on the Gold Coast.
A new renal service will be established at Robina Hospital and there will be expanded services at Southport Hospital.
Mr Nuttall said the Government's strategic vision was for Queenslanders to strive for the best health and quality of life in Australia and to maintain a health system that ranked among the world's best.
