I would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land upon which we gathered.
Ladies and Gentlemen welcome and thank you for attending the Gold Coast Neighbourly Relations or Dividing Fences Forum.
In June, my Parliamentary colleague - Attoney General Kerry Shine - invited Queenslanders to have their say in a legal review aimed at reducing conflict between neighbours because of fences.
Dividing fences are one of the most common causes of neghbourhood conflict and complaints to government departments and councils.
There are often disagreements over the location, height and cost of a fence or beacause neighbours simply can't agree on the type of fence to be built.
There is an old and true saying that: Good fences make good neighbours.
The Government is reviewing the issues relating to dividing fences, including the provisions of the 'Dividing Fences Act 1953'.
Queensland, indeed the world, has changed since the 1950s.
Our economy trode on the sheep's back then; people bought and sold things in pounds and pence, and our population was highly regionalised.
As we know the issues of fences are not limited to rural areas.
Our community is growing strongly.
Our population now exceeds 4 million people. One in five Australians now live in Queensland.
It is important that in our community life is friendly and supportive, not combative and litigious.
That is why the Neighbourly Relations review is so important.
The first part of the review deals with dividing fences, other ares tobe reviewed in coming months will include overhanging trees.
For the Dividing Fences review, submissions are being invited from anyone with ideas or proposals on how the current situation can be improved.
Members of the public have three options to take part in the review: online survey, written submissions or attending a public forum.
Submissions close on the 26th of July.
I would like to thank-you for your interest and participation in the review.
I would also like to thank the members of our panel for their participation. Last changed: [PUBLISHED_DATE] at 9:30 AM
