Gold Coast benefits from million-dollar boost for disability organisations

A Gold Coast organisation will share in a $3.2 million State Government initiative to provide accommodation support services to people with a disability.

Disability Services Minister Warren Pitt and Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said $190,154 had been allocated to the Gold Coast Headway Centre at Woodlands Way, Arundel, as part of the statewide initiative.

Mr Pitt said the funding initiative, announced today to coincide with International Day of People with a Disability, would allow six non-government organisations to provide accommodation support services to 61 people who were most in need.

"This multi-million dollar commitment is part of Disability Services Queensland's Strengthening Non-Government Organisations (SNGO) strategy," he said.

"Non-government organisations deliver quality services to Queenslanders with a disability, but demand for their services is very high, especially for supported accommodation.

"In fact, supported accommodation has long been one of the most pressing needs for people with a disability."

Mr Lawlor said the funding initiative would allow community organisations such as the Headway Centre to offer a wide range of extra accommodation services to suit various needs.

He said the funding was one of several SNGO initiatives designed to increase services for people with a disability.

"The Queensland Government is committed to ensuring a fairer go for people with a disability, their families and carers," Mr Lawlor said.
