Members of the local community today celebrated with 20 Gold Coast jobseekers employed on two job projects that enhanced Gold Coast recreational facilities.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the two skilling Queenslanders for Work jobs projects beautified Driftwood Park and renovated the Gold Coast Hockey Association building at Labrador

"The Gold Coast City Council received a total grant of $250,000 to give twenty disadvantaged jobseekers paid work and a skills boost," Mr Mickel said.

"Each project gave participants paid work and a chance to learn new skills and gain workplace experience."

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said on the Hockey Association project participants built roofing and wall extensions and renovated the second floor of the Gold Coast Hockey Club.

"The facility is now ready to host the 2007 Men's Veteran Championships, the 2007 Premier League and State Open Women's Championships and the 2007 Australian University Games," said Mr. Lawlor.

"The second group upgraded Driftwood Park, constructing gazebos, seating and playground equipment as well as doing landscaping.

"The Gold Coast City Council kicked in $275,200 for materials and equipment," Mr Lawlor said.

Gold Coast Mayor Ron Clarke said the upgraded facilities would give the local economy a boost and add to the quality of life for residents and visitors to the region.

"These projects represent a win-win situation for participants and the community and highlight the value of collaboration between levels of government," said Mayor Clarke.

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor represented Mr Mickel at the graduation.

The Skilling Queenslanders for work is part of the State Government's 1$ billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st century.
