The outstanding talent of two senior visual art student from the Gold Coast feature in the Education Minister's Awards for Excellence in Art touring exhibition opening at the Queensland Art Gallery tonight.

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said Danielle McFarland from A B Paterson College, Arundel, and Dan Sleeman from The Southport School will exhibit their artworks, along with 45 other young Queensland artists at the Queensland Art Gallery until 29 May 2005.

"Danielle McFarland demonstrated excellence in art with her fibre art piece titled Holocaust, while Dan Sleeman demonstrated artistic excellence with his acrylic-on-canvas piece titled Corrugated Self-portrait," Mr Lawlor said.

Minister for Education and the Arts Anna Bligh officially opened the exhibition, which promotes excellence in senior visual art in both state and non-state schools.

Mr Lawlor said the award recipients represent some of the most outstanding examples of art produced by the state's more than 15,000 senior visual arts students.

"These awards showcase the diverse and innovative art being produced in Queensland's secondary schools and the exhibition provides the opportunity to demonstrate their achievements to the wider community," he said.

Mr Lawlor said these awards provide an opportunity for students to be recognised by the tertiary sector and previous exhibitors had gone on to study at university or undertake careers in the arts.

"Many of these talented young people will continue to develop their artistic abilities beyond secondary education and will become the state's future artists," Mr Lawlor said.

District exhibitions were held throughout the state during August and September last year and, from those, the 47 young artists were selected for the current exhibition at the Queensland Art Gallery.

From here the exhibition will tour 10 regional centres between June 2005 and November 2006.

The Education Minister's Awards for Excellence in Art is organised by the Department of Education and the Arts with support from the Queensland Art Gallery and Museum and Gallery Services Queensland.
