Ten emerging stars from Keebra Park State High School are set to shine in Queensland's first stage show spectacular by some of the state's most talented school students.

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the students would take the stage as dancers in Creative Generation - State Schools Onstage, a new and exciting statewide production that kicks off a jam-packed State Education Week (May 15-21).

"The Keebra Park State High School students will participate in a number of items including a massive dance only performance to The Best Years of Our Lives," he said.

Mr Lawlor said it was not only local students that were supporting and celebrating state schools through their involvement in the week.

"Gold Coast television news presenter Rob Readings will become Principal for a Day at Southport State High School on Monday May 16," Mr Lawlor said.

Principal for a Day invites business and community leaders to job shadow a principal during a regular school day to experience some of the innovative programs happening in state schools.

Mr Readings said he loved meeting students and exchanging ideas with teachers. He is looking forward to gaining a better understanding of how principals handle their day-to-day challenges and still manage to inspire and encourage students.

Back to School on Tuesday, May 17 is another highlight of State Education Week.

Back to School Day is a national program, developed by the Education Foundation that invites past students to return to school to share their post-school experiences with current students.

McDonald's Restaurant operations consultant Denis Roche will return to Southport State High School while past students Kara Francis and Joe Wicking will return to Southport State School and participate in an open day and teddy bear's picnic.

Mr Lawlor is also encouraging residents to get behind their local schools and join in locally planned celebrations to mark the week.

"The 2005 State Education Week program is bigger than ever before with more than 480,000 students from nearly 1300 state schools participating in major statewide events and school-based celebrations throughout the state," he said.

"The 10 local students are among 500 state school students who have been selected to perform in the spectacular stage show at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) in Brisbane on Sunday 15 May.

"The students have spent weeks rehearsing for their involvement in the 90-minute performance."

Mr Lawlor said the students will perform alongside all-male tap dance group Raw Metal, electrifying percussion ensemble Isorhythmos, contemporary circus troupe Circa, jazz band Palimpsest featuring Tyrone Noonan from Brisbane rock act george, ex-Chocolate Starfish singer Adam Thompson and leading Queensland tenor Greg Moore.

"This Government is increasing links between schools, communities, arts organisations, artists and events to assist young people and this initiative, supported by QPAC, is an example of what can be achieved by developing these links," he said.

Local schools have also prepared a wide range of activities including open classroom sessions, workshops and morning teas for parents and public displays.
