A Gold Coast-based smallgoods manufacturer will be able to start producing a new range of products for export thanks to a State Government grant.

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the $39,500 grant to Newland Foods would help it introduce new packaging technology at its Ernest Junction plant.

Mr Lawlor said it would enable the company to expand the range of its products.

"The company already successfully produces a range of smallgoods, shredded cheeses and pizza toppings," he said.

"However, it is very keen to expand overseas and therefore needs to offer products that will appeal to more varied tastes."

The new packaging technology would enable the company to produce not only a greater range of chilled products but increase their shelf-life, which was vital to securing overseas markets, he said.

Minister for State Development and Innovation Tony McGrady said the Gold Coast was developing a strong food industry with firms like Newland Foods keen to expand.

"Our great climate and quality local ingredients mean we have a lot of natural advantages in developing food products for export and I commend Newland Foods for having the foresight to see an opportunity and run with it," he said.

Company General Manager Ken Coulston said the grant would be a significant boost to the company.

"It's really helped us move forward with our plans. The money means we can now make sure we get the best equipment and the right advice to get our plant moving," he said.

"We're on track to move into larger premises on the coast in the next year or two and we hope to increase our commitment to generating local employment as our company grows."
